Accessibility of beaches in the Landes

The Landes department and its coastal towns want their beautiful sandy beaches to be accessible to as many people as possible. Many beaches are suitable for users with reduced mobility. Some beaches are equipped and organised so that everyone can enjoy bathing easily and safely. See all the details here!

Landes beaches for people with reduced mobility

Your disability should not stop you making the most of your summer holidays and enjoying the beach and the ocean! Many resorts in the Landes have made their ocean and lakeside beaches accessible, some with the help of the association Handiplage.

There are 36 beaches with reduced mobility access in the Landes, including 22 with Tiralo amphibious wheelchairs and 12 with the Handiplage certification.

The HANDIPLAGE certification

HANDIPLAGE is France’s top beach accessibility certification, providing reliable and objective information on beach accessibility for all types of disability.

Beaches are certified according to four levels of accessibility and services for people with reduced mobility (the higher the level, the more equipment and services available).

The Handiplage certification provides beach users with information on the equipment, services and solutions available on the beach: Handiplage lifeguards with specialist training to help with bathing, Tiralo amphibious wheelchairs, wheelchair-accessible toilets / showers and changing rooms, disabled parking spaces, single-level access, suitable surfaces, beach access mats, sun shelters, signs and information.

What is a Tiralo?

A Tiralo is a beach wheelchair that can be used on sand and in water, providing access to the ocean or the lake for people with reduced mobility.

A total of 22 beaches in the Landes have Tiralos. They can usually be found at lifeguard stations during lifeguard duty times in the summer. If you need one, ask one of the lifeguards on duty: telephone numbers can be found at lifeguard stations.
